Body Image and Body Schema in Adolescents with Idiopathic Scoliosis: A Scoping Review

Abstract Alterations in body representations (i.e., image and schema) are increasingly getting attention clinical practice. Adolescents affected by idiopathic scoliosis experience dissatisfaction, alterations schema have been suggested to be a consequence of the disease development. Although research has recognized predisposing role representation disorders psychopathologies, these aspects largely overlooked this population. This scoping review aims establish state art on widely neglected adolescents scoliosis. PubMed, Scopus, PsycInfo, MEDLINE were consulted select articles published between 2000 2021. Three independent reviewers identified 27 following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews Meta-Analyses extension guidelines. Body was assessed 24 studies. reported, with more severe cases showing higher dissatisfaction. Surgery seems best approach improve outcomes, but studies did not reveal clear associations measures severity (e.g., Cobb angle, hump height) image.
